Letting Go Of Nirvana – The Buddhist Practice of Compassion
October 19, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - October 22, 2017 @ 1:00 pm$475
In the Mahayana traditions of Buddhist practice, compassion and wisdom are considered to be the two wings of enlightenment. Wisdom is fundamentally the direct knowledge of how things really are which arises when our habitual, mostly unconscious, conceptual constructions are dissolved. Compassion is the willingness to be fully present with the inevitable suffering of conditioned existence. As such, it is the active expression of wisdom in the world.
The practice of taking and sending (tong len in Tibetan) is one of the principle means within all Tibetan spiritual traditions that is used to develop a compassion orientation toward all beings. In this simple yet profound practice, the meditator mentally takes on the suffering of others and gives away of everything positive and good. It is known as a mind-training practice because it cuts deeply into our inherent self centeredness which is the fundamental cause of suffering. During the retreat, we will give detailed instructions and guidance for this practice.
In addition, we will give the Bodhisattva Vow to those who wish to take it. This Vow is essentially the decision to not use one’s spiritual practice to just attain the peace of nirvana for oneself. Rather, one vows to do what one can to alleviate the suffering of beings in all situations and circumstances. Prior to the Vow ceremony we will give instructions on the various aspects of it. The taking of the Vow is optional and not a requirement during the retreat.
The cost of the retreat is $475 which includes single room accommodations, all meals, teachings and private interviews. If you wish to participate, please send a check for the full amount to Dan Jorgensen, 13118 Thistledown Court, Auburn, CA 95603.
